    With most Virginia universities moving to 100% online instruction, I would like to hear how your school is managing undergraduate clinical practicum experiences.  I am not so concerned about graduate clinical practicums as these are mostly 1:1 experiences with small patient numbers, but undergraduate clinical requires different arrangements.  Thanks for sharing your plans.

    Hi Karen, 

    GMU is still in the planning stages.  Many sites have not closed to students yet, but a few have.  We have an extended spring break next week to plan.  We have a team developing simulations and we have telehealth capability through our MAP clinics.  I'm hoping we have some clear plans in place by Tuesday.

    Karen and team,
    Hi!  GWU has moved to all remote faculty and staff until April 6 (or longer).  Fortunately our faculty have taught online and all have a Blackboard site and follow guidelines from "Quality Matters."   Faculty will teach asynchronously and synchrously, depending on the faculty.  I have attached (see below) a faculty guidelines tips for you to see - if we can share anything with you, we would be glad to do this.

    In addition, like everyone on this email, we are concerned about how to get our lab and clinical experiences completed by the end of the semester so students can progress onto the next semester.  We have some vendor prepared virtual simulations; I believe faculty are preparing more "telehealth" type simulations they can run remotely.  It may be helpful to start a new thread regarding resources and sharing scenarios since we are all in this together.  We all need instructional continuity for our students to finish while at the same time we are all social distancing and working remotely.  Would this thread be helpful to share scenarios and strategies?  

    Thanks to all; this is an unprecented time in our schools, the university, and our country!  Let's keep in touch to support each other.

    Hello Everyone,
    We are remote until March 30 (still to be finalized). Our BSN and MSN students have done well using Zoom for synchronous sessions held at their usual class times. 

    We have ATI Complete and plan on using some of these if our healthcare partners close their doors to students. For the most part, our BSN and MSN practicum sites are still open to students at this time. We also are working in teams to develop additional simulations incorporating telehealth.

    Hello Colleagues, 
    VCU is using remote learning activities. Faculty and staff are teleworking indefinitely. The didactic portions of courses are continuing via online methods (Blackboard, Zoom, etc.). We have decided to only continue clinical education (as agencies allow) for those anticipating a May 2020 graduation.  Students had to opt in by submitting  a formal request and completing a survey. Fortunately the VCUSON was well positioned to go online as we already have four online programs (RN to BS, NAL, DNP and PhD) and have been in the process of enhancing our online infrastructure. Our challenge will be deciding how to organize clinical/lab education for the other students for summer or beyond.  Thanks for starting this thread.

    Greetings all

    I impressed everyone has time to post on this site! Briefly our status at UVA – Rn to BSN & DNP programs which already were executive format/hybrid continue unaffected. All BSN/CNL/MSN/PhD continue their course work online (Zoom etc)  – starting today  for the balance of the semester (7 weeks left) – as we were on Spring break last week. On grounds Undergrads were to return to home/ off grounds  so classes were delayed a few days. All our BSN/CNL had already completed the necessary semester clinical hours for graduation so only the 4th years students who are healthy are continuing in practicum (as sites allow- with CDC caveats on no COVID19 care patient units etc). The challenge lies currently in our MSN Adv Practice esp the primary care sites for FNP/PNP etc. this is a moving target with daily changes to which sites are still seeing patients and/or allowing Students. Our aim is to support all those who need necessary certification hours to get successfully to graduation. It is a work in progress. Having an instructional designer on staff in SON has made all the difference in the world.  Thanks for all the resource sharing – very helpful. Signing off to ZOOM to work!

    Hi Karen and all,
    JMU has gone totally online for the remainder of the semester.  We are also utilizing virtual simulations and possibly some telehealth options. Our concern is the 50% limit on simulation per course for our practicum courses (for our graduating seniors). Most of our clinical partners are now asking us not to send BSN students. I am not sure if you are experiencing the same concerns from clinical partners at this stage. Should we have a conversation with the VA BON?

    Hi Everyone,
    We have the same concerns that Melody voiced for our BSN students as our major clinical partners are not permitting students in their facilities. We are focusing on our graduating students, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to plan for any student progression.

    The VA BON has not posted anything new since 3/12. As much as changed since then, we do need a conversation with the BON.

    GMU update:

    We still have 2 partners willing to have our UG students. We are prioritizing the senior students but some students are worried about exposure - therefore, we are allowing the students to make a decision on whether they will continue. We are implementing Telehealth at our MAP clinics and adding virtual simulation to our courses. Our nurse practitioner students are struggling as sites close down to students. We are prioritizing NP students who are graduating in May but at this point we are also planning for extensions in meeting required hours. My big concern is competency level upon graduation and not a “this is good enough” approach. Thank you to everyone for sharing. It helps to have this forum to share ideas.

    All:

    Since my initial posting, much as transpired.  Luckily, all of our senior BSN students had completed 99% of clinical hours needed for graduation.  Because our program has more than the 500 hours required by the BON we have pulled this group from clinical sites.  For the junior students it is a different story...we had hoped to get them back into clinical, and at least right now our clinical partners are agreeable.  However, with the University moving to full online course delivery through the end of the semester coupled with students' childcare responsibilities, those with a primary residence outside of the area and, anxious students and parents, we have decided to discontinue clinical practicums for junior BSN students for the remainder of the semester.  We are working with clinical agencies to request make-up practicum times in either late summer or in the fall.  It's not going to be easy.

    In addition, we were advised yesterday that we should prepare to deliver summer courses online.  So we are restructuring schedules so that courses with a clinical component have didactic content front-loaded with tentative plans to move into clinical full-time by the end of June - hopefully!

    As for the BON,  not to go into details, but I am overwhelmed by the rigidity of the BON.  We recently had a 10-year site visit, and their lack of understanding of the current trends in nursing clinical education overwhelms me.  Given that the national certifying boards have also signaled that there will be no adjustments in clinical practicum requirements for APN students, I believe it is up to us to adjust schedules and experiences even if it means program completion is delayed for students by a semester or two.

    Dear colleagues,

     

    We extended spring break an additional week (this week) so that faculty could work on putting their courses on line. Several faculty have never taught didactic courses on line and need assistance to video record lectures and package content and assignments into this learning venue. We set up two studios in the College to provide assistance for recording lectures and to be able to have synchronous video sessions for those classes that have recitations.

    Faculty are also looking at virtual simulation to replace some lab and practicum hours.

     

    Our health system has just suspended all students from coming into the facilities and we are working on alternate assignments; especially for those senior students who may not be at the minimum 500 direct care hours yet.

    Karen:

    Averett University is currently closed through March 31 and all courses have transitioned to online format.  Many/most of our clinical sites have closed to students, as well.  

    We're thankful for the VA Board of Nursing's response yesterday, and are moving ahead to try and prepare our seniors for the NCLEX-RN.
