  • 1.  Discussion around proposed new AACN Essentials/Competency based curriculum

    Posted 10-25-2019 13:45
    Good afternoon:

At our October 20th meeting in Washington, DC, I was asked to set up a discussion forum for VACN members to share their responses to the newly-proposed AACN Essentials, which include a focus on competency based curriculum.

Thoughts that were shared at the meeting include:
    • Faculty development may be an issue as we proceed in this direction
    • State higher education authorities may have a stake, since they define nursing education/APRN
    • We need to make sure that regional and specialty accreditors are on board with these changes
    • It was suggested that the VACN group meet with SCHEV

This discussion forum is created to promote a free, open and professional exchange of ideas around these and other related topics, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Pamela for opening this discussion. I highly support members of VACN meeting with SCHEV, in particular Dr. Monica Osei, Associate Director for
Academic Programs & Instructional Sites and Joe Difilippo, Director of Academic Affairs & Planning.

All, I think we should create a strategy for a meeting with SCHEV leadership as suggested. The question is when... but perhaps we could extend an invitation to these leaders to the Spring VACN meeting.  Essentials will not yet be approved, but it might still be worth a conversation. Jean
